One more note for the night.
On Tuesday night I was inspired. I was ready to change the world. Well more like the city I live in. But still, it was awesome.
Its an idea that has been building in my head for a really long time. Well I guess not that long. More like 8 months ago.
What if we went around asking people what they would do with an unlimited amount of money. So if money wasn’t an issue what would you do? How would you change the world?
I have had a few ideas for the city but they are big and crazy and probably a bit silly. I also don’t think I have the resources currently but back in February when this idea was forming, it was after watching Shawshank Redemption. This movie changed my perspective and helped make my idea seem a little more plausible. The man in the prison writes letter asking for books to start a library. Letter after letter, year after year and finally one day the books arrive.
Now let’s transform that into the idea that I have been thinking of. What if there was a way to start a community garden for the homeless in our community. A garden that they help set up and are in charge of. If they had a way to access water to keep the plants growing and they had the patience to work the land. I think it would be the starting point of a larger plan. If these folks could create a flourishing garden that is able to provide at least one harvest, I think there is so much potential. It would be like proof for anyone to realize, it is worth time, energy and money to invest in these people. It could turn into building houses kind of like habitat for humanity into something that they could do as a community with other members of the community. It would not only be outreach but it would be work that these people would be proud of. They would own something, have something and I think it might be something to help them keep moving forward. Because they would then have the confidence in themselves and others would also have the confidence in them.
I think it could be a great opportunity. This summer while in Ohio, I saw community gardens all over the town. There were even sections for the homeless in the community, so that they too had access to the food. That is a very biblically rooted idea, to leave the corner crops for those less fortunate.
My second idea, is one that has been on my heart since high school. Its the idea that runners go through and appreciate shoes more than most people. Its the idea that when runners are done using their shoes, its just the beginning if they were to be give to those without shoes. I think if money wasn’t an issue, one of the things I would do, is to be sure that people all over the world had a pair of shoes on their feet. I commend TOMS for striving towards that goal.
Food and shoes and shelter are all blessings to me and I hope that some way, these ideas are able to lead to something beautiful and changing in our community and in the lives of those that don’t yet have them.
